The verdict of sensational murder case of Principal Gopal Krishna Muhuri, was announced to day by the special tribunal in Chittagong. The learned judge, Mr. M. Hasan Imam pronounced capital punishment to 4 convicts of whom two were tried in absentia. Other 4 accused of whom again two were tried in absentia received lifetime rigorous imprison (r.i) plus a fine of Tk 50, 000 each. When the judgment was pronounced the court premises was crowded among whom the relatives of the accused were also present who cried out after hearing the verdict. The accused who received punishment also found to break in tears as the judgment was pronounced.

The learned court acquitted other accused including three college teachers including one Mr. Idris Mian of Nazirahat College.

The accused however can make an appeal to the High court within a month or so.
It may be recalled that Mr. Muhuri, Principal of Nazirhat College was assassinated by a group of armed gangsters early in the morning in his Chittagong city residence on 16th November, 2001. He was asleep when the gangsters arrived at his residence in the morning. Hearing that a group of students came to see him the learned principal got up from his bed to receive his students in the adjacent drawing room. No sooner he took his seat in one of the sofa one of the strangers shot him at his head point blank. How many shots he made is any body?s guess. The strangers then took to their hills immediately before the inmates and neighbours could guess what really happened.

I together with Prof. Sirajul Islam Choudhury, Professor Anisuzzaman, Journalist-teacher Mr. Abul Momen and Professor Hayat Mahmud visited his family some time in December, 2001. Mrs. Muhuri had no words to speak out her feelings, as she must have faced persons like us, the so-called dignitaries many a times. She showed us the terrible pictures after he was shot dead by a group of young men who, according to their guess, were students of the college of the deceased principal. It is a shocking and unbearable experience for me. Neither we had any words to express our feelings.

More on Principal Muhuri in my next posting.
