DU Teachers Trial
Will the Government show magnanimity and release DU teachers right now?

The judgment on Monday, 21 January 2008. Special Metropolitan Magistrate heard the last witnesses on the case of DU teachers who were arrested on the charge of breaking emergency law, destruction of public properties and damage of public vehicles including burning. The case was filed in a Shabag police station. After completing the procedures the magistrate Mr. Habibur Rahman declared that the judgment wilwould given on January 21, 2008.

In another similar case also filed in the same police station the hearing will take place on the same day in the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mr. Golum Rabbani. Why the same convicts are charged with same offence twice i any bodys guess. But the two cases are running parallel in two different courts. On top of it a one man inquiry commission headed by a retired supreme court Justice Habibur Rahman Khan. The learned justice though had submitted his report long time back its findings were not made public, least taking action on the basis of the report. Al these government initiated proceedings are being carried out by for what purpose, we the commoners fail to understand.

Would our adviser retired general Matin, now in charge of home affairs, tell us why this hide and seek game the government is playing with arrested DU teachers and students. If the government wishes that let the case(s) be decided at the court, then why it had constituted an inquiry commission at all. Why the advisers, including CA are sending messages of peace and settlement indicating that government is finding ways to release the captive teachers. If you are convinced that teachers are guilty and deserve to be punished, then stick to proceedings of trials, come what may. Even one adviser went to the extent making a childish remark, Whatever the outcome of the trial, they will be released and reinstated.

When the teachers and students being frustrated with dilly-dally behaviour of the government undertook programme of action, peaceful but determined. the government then send message of reconciliation. This is an old tactic of buying time. Even the present home adviser general Matin yesterday asked for few days when the teachers threatened of launching sterner actions.

In the meanwhile the situation inside DU campus is becoming volatile. No classes are being held, examinations suspended, teachers and students wearing black badges, forming making human chain covering their faces with piece of black cloths. The Aparayjeya Bangla has become the centre of activities of the students and teachers. Yesterday the teachers added a new dimension in the movement by hoisting black flag in the arts faculty building. These silent, peaceful movements are spreading in other universities and educational institutions. If the military junta backed government of Mr. Fakhruddin does not act fast the situation may get out of control. And another violent conflict between academic community and disciplined force will surely disrupt all plans and so called road maps of the government and its friends, philosophers and guides behind the seen.

Surely the government as gesture of good will and from the view of humanity and magnanimity on the part of the government can withdraw all cases against them and release them unconditionally. Will the government show its courage to do this? The teachers had suffered a lot (armys ego must have been satisfied) and still suffering. It does not speak of well on the part of the government by punishing your own academic community.
