Who Has More Power? Man or God?

It is a part of human nature to yield to the powerful, and also to fear the fearful. This is also ingrained in animal nature; deer, water hog and wilder beast etc. - all fear lion. It is its inherent predatory nature, strength and ferocity that make a lion the King of jungle.

But the title bestowed on lions alone is somewhat unrealistic. In fact, lions fear elephants. They do not confront them, especially when they are at a water hole, in a herd or are nursing and training their babies.

Like the animal kingdom, we humans also have our own kings and queens. They are the powerful ones, who control us and our destiny. A minuscule number of them inherit their kingly and queenly qualities from their parents or close relatives; others acquire their lord-like powers by effectively using their mental prowess and manipulative qualities.

Others who become kings of the ordinary people are their political and religious leaders. Political leaders maintain their hold over their subjects by always trying to be politically correct. Since a politically correct person cannot always be a truthful person, falsehood, in a way, becomes a virtue, following which, many of our political leaders help themselves in maintaining their influence and control over their unsuspecting victims.

Religious leaders also follow the same pattern. Falsehood is their stock in trade. It comes to them from the doctrines they learn from their peers and religious books. They live with, and propagate falsehood in order to maintain their elevated and lucrative positions in the societies and communities they are members of. Among innumerable falsehoods that are prevalent in all religions, one is the topic of my todays short discussion.

Islam tells us that it is only God who knows what is in a mothers womb. It is He who decides a childs sex after his or her conception by his or her mother. According to the Islamic scripture, no human can temper with, or change the sex of a child.

Until some years ago, I used to think that, perhaps, the above claim was true. But the claim of Gods dominance over the creation of human lives became a mockery on account of the following facts, reported by the Arab News in its edition of June 16, 2004 :

Three Saudi sisters have undergone surgery at a hospital here to become men and two others will follow suit.

Dr. Yasser Jamal, a professor of surgery at King Abdul Aziz University Hospital who operated on two of the sisters and is preparing for the other operations told Arab News the patients ranged in ages between 19 and 38.

This is not the first case. What is bizarre is that it happened to five girls in the same family, Dr. Jamal said.

Dr. Jamal insists on the term gender correction rather than reassignment. We are taking the person back to his or her original sex according to the intensive tests that are done, but we will not operate on people that are actually men or women to change them to the opposite sex just because they want to, he said.

The chromosomes decide. If the test shows xx, the person is female, and if it is xy they are male, he said. Also, tests are performed on the testicular or ovarian tissue as well as the patients internal organs for example, does this person have a uterus? Then that is a strong indication that she is a female.

He added that every person is born male or female the only problem that might cause sex misinterpretation is a defect in the external organs. Unqualified midwives assisting at home births might not understand the complications, he said.

It is apparent from Dr. Jamals comment that God is not at all as powerful as He is depicted in the religious books, and that He is as fallible as we all humans are. Like us, He, too, fails in ensuring the gender of a child.

The mistakes He makes in His creation require a person, like Dr. Jamal; had there been no such humans as him to correct Gods mistakes, what sort of a life the five Saudi sisters would have endured is easy for all of us to guess and to pity upon!

Does the condition with which the five sisters took their birth testify that God is All-Powerful and Omniscient?
