Before we could get over the loss of Shamsur Rahman, another star of our Bangla Universe, Nitun Kundu has turned into Nova. I always thought this Freedom-Fighter painter turned into sculpturist and furniture designer will always live like one of his many sculptures, which have ushered in modern times to our disheveled urban environment. Ahmed Sharif, Shamsur Rahman, Quayuum Chowdhury, Hasan Hafizur Rahman, Emdad Hossain, Nitun Kundu, Mustafa Monowar , Shahid Quadri, Syed Shamsul Huq, Fazal Shahabuddin, Hasan Azizul Huq Ahamed Safa, Wahidul Huq and the like luminaries came almost together to illuminate a society which was just emerging out of the darkness of communalism. They lit their individual torches in different fields and their collective works gave us a solid ground to stand together holding each other's hands in preparation for a never ending long march to the future. Interestingly, their time can be compared with that of Willium Morris and his friends in the history of evolution of the English culture. Nitun Kundu with his institution called Atobi has revolutionized the indoor taste of our urban living. I dont know how long we have to wait for another Nitun Kundu. The death of Nitun Kundu within a few days of demise of Shamsur Rahman has caused a serious anguish in me about the future of our dreams of a secular humane democratic society if such succession of death continues. I dont know what will happen when the communalists Golam Azam, Ershad, Khaleda Zia and the Afganisthan-trained Talibans thier axis of evil open the Pandora's Box to destroy all that we cherish Human rights, Liberty, Democracy and Secular philosophy of life.
