Organize for the Struggle Ahead: Bringing the Killers of Shah A.M.S. Kibria to Justice

Asma Kibria

Appeal to the People of Bangladesh

The struggle to bring my husbands killers to justice may well be a long and difficult one. To achieve success and mobilize the silent majority in this country we must organize our campaign with great care and precision. A disciplined approach is essential if a large mass movement is to maintain its peaceful nature. The participatory approach that I have chosen will be in keeping with my husbands unshakeable faith in the courage, commitment and strength of the ordinary people of this country. By the Grace of Almighty Allah, we will show the world that such ordinary people standing together can achieve quite extraordinary things.

Current Programs

  1. Silent Protest on 12th February. All over the country I would request people from every walk of life to stand silently in the street in their own neighborhoods or major roads from 4.30 pm to 5.00 pm on that day. They should carry black flags and wear black badges.
  2. Dusk vigil at Malancha: A group of 73 volunteers one for each year of my husbands life - will hold a silent vigil in the road in front of Malancha (House 58, Road 3-A, Dhanmondi) from 4 pm to 6 pm each day on the 16th, 17th, and 18th of February. At 5.45 pm candles will be lit and at 6 pm they will be extinguished.
  3. Signature campaign   Oath in blood-red letters. The signature campaign in Bangladesh (it has already commenced overseas) should begin at 5 pm on the 12th of February. The format of the signature sheets is as follows:

Thick white cotton cloth sheets (preferably 10 feet long, 45 inches wide) should be prepared for signatures.

Each sheet should carry the name of the campaign, the demand to bring the killers of Shah A.M.S. Kibria to justice, and the name of the district.

Signatures (written in red, water-proof felt-tipped pens) should be collected until the 28th of February.

All completed signature sheets should be delivered to House 58, Road 3-A, Dhanmandi, Dhaka by the 2nd of March.

Further programs will be announced in due course.
