Dear Moderator,

A sum of BD Tk. 85,526.16 (Taka eighty five thousand five hundred twenty six and Paisa sixteen) only credited to my account on 29th September. I checked it day before yesterday (11. 10. 04). This amount is equivalent to Singapore dollar 2,469.00 (Two thousand four hundred sixty nine) only. The rate of exchange was 1 S$ = Tk 34.64. Hope this message will remove your anxiety.

The MM flood work project at Roumari is progressing well. A simple function will be arranged probably on 29th October where I on behalf of MM would hand over the sum to the Chairman of the school committee.

MM Flood Fund update: 2nd fund transfer in Bangladesh

From:  MM Publication < [email protected] >
Date:  Tue Sep 28, 2004  7:56 am
Subject:  Latest on MM Relief Fund Initiative! : Fund update

Dear all,

We  hereby seek to inform you that through our flood donation program, we collected US$ 2668.50 plus Singapore $ 2500.00. After deduction of Paypal charge of US$ 72.50 and conversion into Singapore dollars (Paypal rate: US$1.00 = S$1.67), we have received accumulated donation of S$ 6836.00. In our first installment, we have sent a check of S$ 4361.00 to Prof Ajoy Roy's Bank account in Dhaka  through Agrani Exchange House Pte Ltd in Singapore last month. The remaining S$2475  has been sent to his account yesterday (Monday, Sept 27, 2004).  The bank has charged S$6.00 for the service in both the transactions. We expect the remaining money for this transaction of S$2469 (S$ 2469x36.64 = Tk 85,526.16) to reach Dhaka by Friday. We request Prof. Ajoy Roy to check his account in Dhaka on Saturday or later and give us a reply. Prof Roy will also give us an update from time to time as to how the money is being spent in rebuilding the schools. Professor Ajoy K. Roy is part of a team which is going to a selected area in northern Kurigram, namely Roumari, a police station under Kurigram district- a remote char island.

With regards,

Avijit Roy

MM Flood Fund update: Dr. Roy received first fund transfer in Bangladesh

Dr. Roy's confirmation email to Dr. Alamgir:

Dear Dr. Alamgir,

This is to let you know that a sum of (BD) Tk. 148,679.70 (Taka one lakh forty eight thousand six hundred seventy nine & Paisa seventy) only   credited to my account that is equivalent to Singapore dollar 4,355/- (four thousand three hundred fifty five) only. The rate of exchange was 1 S$ = Tk 34.14. The amount has been credited on 21st August. Because of turmoil prevailing in the city, I could not go to the Bank to inquire about. Hope this message will remove your anxiety.

As regards programme, our probing team had visited the area from 15-18th August and saw a few schools that were severely damaged. Yesterday, I had a talk with a leader of the locality and a social worker who commands respect, who called on me at Dhaka. We have two schools in mind one at a Char Khedaimari (in between Roumari and Chilmari) at the mouth of Bramahputra and another at Nageswari about 25 Km from Kurigram. I have asked him to make estimate(s) for both schools with the help of the local people (teachers and respected persons) and the school committee(s). After the estimation we would make a final decision where we would make our contribution. When the estimation is made I myself would visit the places and schools. But remember, the place is still inaccessible and perhaps it would take a few months. In the meanwhile local people will work out on their need- nature & amount.

Kindly pass on this message to concerned persons, [email protected] as well as to moderator MM for posting. With regards,

Ajoy Roy

S$ 4361.00 (S$ 1.00 = Tk 34.14) sent to Dhaka:

Dear all,

We regret that the sudden unfortunate demise of MM's idol Dr. Humayun Azad distracted us from our Flood Relief Fund-related activities. We apologize for failing to update our work on this front.

However, our work has moved on, on that front too. I hereby seek to acknowledge that as of 8th of August, we received US$ 1147.50 plus Singapore $ 2500.00. After deduction of Paypal charge of US$ 32.50 and conversion into Singapore dollars (Paypal rate: US$1.00 = S$1.67), we have received accumulated donation of S$ 4360.79. Hence, in our first installment, we have sent a check of S$ 4361.00 to Prof Ajoy Roy's Bank account in Dhaka on Monday through Agrani Exchange House Pte Ltd in Singapore. The Bank will charge S$6.00 for the service and remaining S$4355.00 will the credited to Prof Roy's account. The exchange rate is S$1.00 = Tk 34.14. We expect the money to reach Dhaka by Saturday. We request Prof. Ajoy Roy to check his account in Dhaka on Saturday or later and give us a reply. Prof Roy will also give us an update from time to time as to how the money is being spent.

We also have received some more donation and we expect to receive some more which we will send to Prof Roy in a second installment in early next month. If you haven't made your contribution yet, please do so ASAP if you wish. In the meantime, you may like to keep updated with our Relief Fund-related activities at the following link:

We however regret that we may not be able to update this page as regularly since our most dedicated and expert moderator Avijit Roy will be away for an academic conference for 3-4 weeks.

If you have any disagreement or further query, please do reply to [email protected].

Sincerely,

A humanitarian appeal from MM
Please Help the Flood stricken Bangladesh People

Pic: Satellite images have revealed the devastating impact of recent flooding in Bangladesh, with two thirds of country submerged in water.: Flooding is shown as dark blue and bright white to highlight two ways in which the satellite Aqua can spot ground water (Image: NASA GSFC)

Mukto Mona has taken a small but valuable initiative to collect donation for flood affected people in Bangladesh. We would like to extend our gratitude to everybody who have made donations for this humanitarian cause through MM or any other reliable organizations during this critical times of our country. Thanks to NFB, Vinnomot, Banglar Nari, Muktochinta and other forums for posting Mukto Monas appeal for donation for flood affected people in Bangladesh .

How the money will be spent:

MM has decided to go with Dr. Ajoy Roys suggestion to rebuild one or two schools in flood affected areas after the water recedes.

Professor Ajoy K. Roy is part of a team which is  going to most flood devastated area in northern Kurigram, namely Roumari, a police station under Kurigram district- a char island where the mighty Brahamputra enters Bangladesh . They might visit some other places adjacent to these localities - namely Chilmari, Nageswari and Bhurungamari. Both Roumari and Bhurungamari have sentimental attachments to lot of Bangladeshis minds . These two localities remained free during 9 -months of our war during 1971. The Bangladesh flag all the time flew in those two localities. Freedom Fighters set up their local administration in those areas through the directives of Free Independent Bangladesh government at Mujibnagar, when almost rest of Bangladesh was under Pakistani occupation.

This team will collect data regarding damage of school houses and relevant matters in educational area. The team may proceed to Kurigram in the next week as soon as the communication is restored. After getting back the data we may decide which school(s) to take up, and a detail plan would be chalked out then.

Dr Ajoy Roy is also getting in touch with some remote areas in the district of Bhola to estimate the extent of damage to school houses- the area where he did some erection of low cost houses for some riot stricken poor families following October 1(2001) general election.

Mukto-Mona advisory board will send a detail report to its members and readers on how and where the money will be spent as soon as a final plan is made after all the data is gathered from the above mentioned areas.
