Dr. Ajoy Roy on
 Mukto-Mona  Flood Relief

I am glad that MM has taken a serious move to raise some fund for providing some relief to flood victims. Needless to say that the sufferings to common people are enormous and loss in life, materials etc. are colossal. As I guess that the collected fund would of some token nature, it would be unwise to make an attempt for MM as a forum trying to reach directly to some flood affected areas for distribution of relief(s) to victims. This is because the receiving end would be too long and our resources would be too small to face the chaotic situation. On top of it we would face problems relating to communication and other logistics supports. Plus you would need some time to collect the fund, by the time of which most likely the flood water would recede and new type of problem- problems of rehabilitation and resettlement would emerge.

My humble suggestion is that we concentrate to do some work in post flood rehabilitation program concentrating on some specific areas in some locality, especially in some remote locality. I suggest that we choose the field of education. No doubt during the flood many kaccha/ or semi pucca schoolhouses have been washed away, and poor boys & girls may face financial difficulties to continue their education. So we may choose to work in two projects (fund permitting):

1. Construction of one or two school house (depending on available of fund)

2. Continuation of Education by providing new books & other educational implements, tuition/examination fees etc.

In implementing the projects we make seek cooperation of some honest and sincere organizations involving students-teachers-social conscious people. We may even work in cooperation with some reputed and experienced professional NGOs like Proshika/BRAC etc. I have some personal experience to work with one or two such NGOs.

I am already making an attempt to collect some data where we could implement
the above plan through some of our local people connected with education,
especially local teachers.

Alternatively, you may donate the collected fund to either (1) PMs relief
fund, or (2) to Red Crescent. In neither case MM would have any say how to
and where to spend the fund?

Incidentally, I may mention that at present I am associated with some
teachers-students based organizations in very humble way who are engaged in:

1. Saline project
2. Bread (hand made) making project and flattened rice-sweet (chira-gur) packing
3. Collection and distribution of old clothes.

The distribution mechanism is too difficult and left with our young forces.

If you need any cooperation in this regard I shall be too glad to extend it.
And I am sure that members of MM have better ideas.

With regards,

Ajoy Roy
